2 Corinthians 4 explains why Paul does not lose heart. He refuses deceptive methods and does not tamper with God's word, but sets the truth plainly before everyone. If people do not see the gospel, it is because Satan has blinded their minds, yet the God who created light has shone into believers' hearts to show the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. This treasure is carried in fragile jars of clay, so the power is clearly God's. Paul is afflicted but not crushed, struck down but not destroyed. Outwardly he is wasting away, but inwardly he is renewed daily, looking to an eternal weight of glory.
Historical Context
Lesson 19 showed the surpassing glory of the new covenant and the veil removed in Christ. Chapter 4 continues: because of this ministry, Paul does not give up, even though his critics mocked his weakness and suffering. Many in Corinth admired impressive speakers and outward success. Paul shows that God's power is displayed through weak servants.

Interpretation & Insights
No Tricks With God's Word
"Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart" (4:1). Paul's ministry was not his achievement but God's mercy. So he renounces shameful, hidden ways. "We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word" (4:2). He does not twist Scripture to please people, add promises God has not made, or use pressure and tricks. Instead he sets forth the truth openly in the sight of God. This is a needed warning today against any preaching that changes the gospel for popularity or profit.
Why Some Do Not See
If the gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing (4:3). "In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" (4:4). The "god of this world" is Satan, whose power is real but limited; he is a created being under God's rule. Unbelief is not only a lack of information but a spiritual blindness. That is why we pray as we share the gospel. Christ is "the image of God": in Him the invisible God is fully seen (Colossians 1:15).
Light in Our Hearts
"For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake" (4:5). The message is about Jesus, not the messenger. "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (4:6). Just as God spoke light into the first creation (Genesis 1:3), He shines into dark hearts and makes a new creation. Coming to faith is God's gracious work. When you first saw Christ's beauty, it was because God had opened your eyes.
Treasure in Jars of Clay
"But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us" (4:7). Clay jars were cheap, ordinary and easily broken. The treasure is the gospel and the knowledge of Christ. God deliberately puts His treasure in weak containers, so that no one mistakes where the power comes from. Your weakness does not disqualify you from serving God. It is the very place where His power is seen.
Afflicted but Not Crushed
"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (4:8-9). Paul does not pretend that suffering is easy. Believers are pressed, confused, attacked and knocked down. But God does not let them be finally crushed or abandoned. Paul carries in his body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be shown (4:10-11). The pattern of the cross, suffering leading to life, marks the Christian life. Suffering is not proof of weak faith, and God never promised that His people would be spared every trouble.
Believing and Speaking
Paul quotes Psalm 116:10: "I believed, and so I spoke" (4:13). The same faith moves him to keep preaching, because he knows that the God who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus (4:14). Resurrection hope is the engine of faithful service. Everything is for their sake, so that as grace reaches more people, thanksgiving overflows to God's glory (4:15).
Renewed Day by Day
"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day" (4:16). Our bodies age, weaken and suffer. Yet the Spirit renews us inwardly each day. "For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison" (4:17). Paul's afflictions were severe (11:23-28), so "light" does not make pain small. It means even heavy pain is light compared with the glory to come (Romans 8:18). So we look not to what is seen, which is passing, but to what is unseen, which is eternal (4:18). Lesson 21 continues with our future resurrection home.

Prayer Points
Father, thank You for shining into my dark heart to show me Your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. Thank You that You put this treasure in a jar of clay like me, so that the power is clearly Yours. Keep me honest with Your word, never twisting it for approval or gain. Open the eyes of those blinded by the enemy, and give me courage to speak because I believe. When I am afflicted, perplexed, or struck down, hold me so that I am not crushed or forsaken. Renew my inner self day by day, and fix my eyes on the eternal glory to come. In Jesus' name, Amen.
